Strack listened to the stranger. Every word—every fucking word—was true. He nodded when the story ended.

“A lovely fucking tale, bud. What, did you work there too? Were you on the posse that was sent after me? Hell, you’re lucky you weren’t with the ones who caught up to me at Cedar Gulch. Those fuckers are pushing up earth right now. Or maybe they’re still there; their bones whitened by the sun.”

The man at the fire didn’t speak for a moment; he just stared—stared with those eyes that drank firelight.

“I was there, Strack, but not in the sense you’re thinking.” A small grin lifted the corner of his mouth. He reached into a pocket and drew a watch with no hands. “Well, it’s about your time,” he said, snapping it shut. “Shall we?” he asked but made no motion to rise.

Strack raised his big gun back up, aiming it at the stranger. “No, I think not, bud. It might be your time, but my time, shit, mine ain’t coming for a while.”

The man chuckled and smiled. He licked his lips, his tongue just a little too long.

Strack fired, cocking the hammer and firing until the gun was empty. Usually, he knew his aim to be true and the first round would be lethal, but he cared little for this guy. He had extra rounds of ammunition anyway and he’d be stripping the corpse soon.

The blasts echoed, and the night lit up with muzzle flashes. Strack’s ears were ringing, but he knew it would fade. It always did.

“Are you done?” the man asked. The stick was back in his hand. Not a single bullet had hit him.

Strack looked at his big gun, shocked. They weren’t more than a few feet apart. There was no way he’d missed.

“How…?” he grunted, still looking at the smoking weapon.

The man smiled. “One last story, and then we’ll go.” He opened the watch again. “You have a few more moments.”

Strack didn’t bother reloading, he just put the gun back in the holster. It was warm against his flesh, a little too warm.

The man spoke.
